Baltimore Oysters: 3 Fun Oyster Facts

Oysters are nature’s water filters

The native Eastern oyster is a crucial part of the Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem and oysters are considered to be one of nature’s best water filtration systems. They are filter feeders and they eat algae that has become contaminated by pollutants and filter our anything harmful. A single oyster can remove harmful pollutants from up to 60 gallons of water a day. In the Bay, oyster reefs have been constructed to help combat pollution and they are a major contributor to the health of our waterways.

Oysters are really good for you

Oysters are a nutritional powerhouse. They contain a balanced assortment of protein, carbohydrates, and fats and are an excellent choice for people on low-cholesterol diets. They also contain a multitude of vitamins including A, B1, B2, B3, C, and D. You can get your daily recommended dose of iron, copper, iodine, magnesium, calcium, zinc, manganese and phosphorus simply by eating four or five Baltimore oysters. So skip your multivitamin and eat some oysters instead!

Humans have been eating oysters for thousands of years

Humans have enjoyed eating oysters since the Neolithic period. They were first cultivated thousands of years ago by the Chinese who raised them in artificial ponds and used their crushed shells for medicinal purposes. Since then they have been an important food source in countries across the globe. Here in Baltimore we are lucky to have access to oysters farmed in our region, ensuring that they are fresh, full of nutrients, and absolutely delicious.
