Edible Types of Crab

Edible Types of Crab

Crabs are a delicacy all over the world!

At Costas Inn, we are all about crab, even in the chilly winter months. Whether you’re getting ready for a playoff game or having friends and family over for a party, delicious blue crab is always a perfect choice. Beyond blue crab, there are many other varieties of delicious crab you can choose from. Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of crabs!

Blue Crab

This Maryland favorite can be found on tables and in crab cakes. Blue crabs range in size from 3.5 inches to 5.5 inches or more depending on where and when they are harvested. They are known for their trademark blue color and delicious taste.

Dungeness Crab

These crabs are harvested from coastal waters, and they weigh anywhere from 1.75 lbs to 4 lbs. They can be any shade from brown to purple and are sweet to the taste. Dungeness crabs peak in the winter months and are harvested once they are at least 6 ¼ inches long. This type of crab works beautifully all by itself or mixed and turned into crab cakes.

Horseshoe Crab

Horseshoe crabs look like a horseshoe, which is how they get their name. They are found throughout the Atlantic coast but aren’t a popular choice for food since they don’t have a generous ratio of meat to shell.

King Crab

King crab has a delicate flavor that works well in Asian dishes. They can get very large in size and weigh up to 25 lbs. Typically, only about 25% of a king crab is edible.

Stone Crab

Stone crabs are recognizable by their big, hard claws that are full of delectable crab meat. They are harvested from October to May and only have their claws eaten. It’s normal for the crabs to have their claws torn off and then be thrown back into the ocean to regrow them.
