Four Common Myths You Might Hear Regarding Seafood

Seafood is plentiful in the Maryland area, and it comes as no surprise that it’s a big part of the cuisine. Seafood has many health benefits and provides you with a large variety of delicious food. There are many facts and health benefits of seafood, so there is a lot of false information about seafood. Continue reading to learn more about some common myths regarding seafood.

Here are some common myths about seafood.

Some Fish Are Full Of Mercury

Many people believe that many types of fish are full of mercury and should not be consumed in high amounts. Although some areas of the world are impacted by high concentrations of mercury that affect fish and shellfish, other healthy options are available. Many types of seafood, including mussels, are excellent sources of selenium. Selenium is an essential mineral that counteracts mercury toxicity.

Seafood Is Radioactive

Many regular activities may expose you to higher radiation levels than consuming seafood. For example, Mammograms, X-rays, and riding on airplanes expose you to more radiation than any serving of seafood.

Frozen Fish Is Unhealthy

A common misconception about food, in general, is that fresh is always better than frozen. However, this isn’t true for some foods like TV dinners and frozen fruits and vegetables. Eating frozen fish such as salmon, tilapia, and other forms of fish is entirely safe.

Seafood Is Hard To Cook

One widespread myth about seafood is that seafood is challenging to cook. Although many types of fish cook more rapidly than other meats, it is easy to tell when your fish is overcooking. Seasoning seafood to get the most out of your dish is also very simple.
