What Makes Maryland Crabs So Special to Residents?

You can get crabs from other coastal states, but there’s just something special about the experience of eating crabs in Maryland. A Maryland crab is more than just an item on the menu — it’s an activity that involves all the senses.

Crabs are very popular among Maryland residents.

There are many individual preferences regarding picking style, seasoning blend, and even cooking technique. However, one thing that all people agree on is that Maryland crabs are delicious and unique. Listed below are three reasons why.

What Makes Crabs Special

Maryland crabs are more specifically known as blue crabs. Although they’re not exclusive to the waters surrounding Maryland, they are preferred by consumers in this area. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has reported that about 50 percent of the country’s blue crabs come from Maryland waters.

They are a big part of the region’s culture and heritage, especially in the summer. Blue crabs are unique because of their delicate texture and the depth of flavor.

Best Locations to Eat Crabs

Many people enjoy hosting crab feasts in the summer with their family and friends. Some use rental spaces while others set up tables covered in newspapers on their lawns. If you’d like to enjoy some crabs on any given day, many restaurants around the state also offer live entertainment for a unique experience. You can also find crab meat for purchase in some supermarkets.

How to Pick Crabs

There are many different techniques and approaches for picking crabs. Some people use tools like knives and mallets, while some use their teeth. Crabs are often served with a cold beer and even dipping sauces. However you choose to enjoy Maryland blue crabs, you’ll likely need a lot of space and plenty of napkins.
