The Potential Health Benefits of Crab Cakes

Let’s get this party going by talking about why crab cakes can be good for you. The crab meat itself is jam-packed with protein. Protein helps you build and maintain muscle mass. Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, and selenium all improve your vitality and help you treat various chronic health conditions.

For instance, fatty acids help make your heart healthier. After all, they decrease the number of triglycerides, make blood clotting less problematic, and reduce the chances of developing an irregular heartbeat. In addition, vitamin B12 and folate counteract the vitamin deficiency known as anemia. Finally, crabs and other types of seafood boost your brainpower, too. Reliable research has shown that people who eat seafood at least once a week exhibited lower risks of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Even More Fun Facts About Blue Crabs

The prime season for softshell crabs runs from mid-May to September. So right now, that means you’re in the sweet spot. Meanwhile, primetime for hardshell crabs is a much bigger window. It runs from April to December. Oh, one more thing – the biggest, thickest, and fattest crabs will come around in the fall – that’s because they are preparing to hibernate for the winter.

Blue crabs are known to eat plants, snails, and even other seafood! If dead fish is on the menu, they won’t say no. Likewise, they won’t hesitate to engage in a spot of cannibalism when they get sufficiently hungry. Crabbers use bottom trawls, dredges, and traps to catch the crabs that they will eventually sell. Did you know that our crabby friends help make the Chesapeake Bay a better place to live? They do this by controlling the local populations of fish and other marine life.
