5 Interesting Facts About Shrimp

Impress your friends with these interesting facts about shrimp!

Shrimp is one of the most popular kinds of seafood and is a favorite to many. It’s used in many different applications, including pasta, salads, and is commonly served on skewers. Although they’re some of the smallest species that come from the sea, they pack a lot of flavor! Here are five interesting facts that you probably didn’t know about shrimp!

Protein

Like many other seafood selections, shrimp is rich in many nutrients. Shrimp is primarily a protein and provides about 20 grams of protein per three ounces — that amount is comparable to three ounces of chicken breast. In addition to the protein, shrimp also contains a very small percentage of fat and carbohydrates.

Nutrients

You will find vitamins like B12, phosphorous, and iodine in shrimp. Surprisingly, they also contain two types of antioxidants, which aren’t often found in animal products. In four ounces of steamed shrimp, you will receive more than 100 percent of the daily value for those nutrients, and selenium, choline, and copper.

Calories

You can imagine since shrimp is a small food item that they are probably also low in calories. This fact is true as a medium-sized shrimp contains about seven calories. For those that really enjoy shrimp, a dozen shrimp is still below 100 calories!

Allergies

Shrimp is a common allergen for many people, especially for those that are allergic to shellfish as shrimp are a part of that family. People who are allergic to shrimp that have been exposed to it will suffer from cold-like symptoms including a stuffy nose and sneezing. Also, they may experience hives, itching, and even as severe as anaphylaxis.

Industry Fraud

It has been discovered in recent surveys and research that about 30 percent of shrimp products on the market are being misrepresented. Shrimp that has been farmed is sometimes labeled as being wild or from the gulf. This means that consumers should be mindful of their shrimp purchases and do some brand research when purchasing shrimp.
