Expert-Level Tips for Plating a Seafood Platter

Even so, you can still practice your culinary skills and experiment with plating your next seafood platter!

Holiday get-togethers are bound to look a little different this year. Sure, Thanksgiving might have been a rousing success even if it had to be socially-distanced. We all hoped that by the time Christmas came, we’d be back to business as usual in restaurants and in planning delightful dinner parties. Well, the latest Coronavirus surges have taken those fun experiences off the table, so to speak. Even so, you can still practice your culinary skills and experiment with plating your next seafood platter!

Use More Color: A Festival of Food

Ideally, you can combine up to five different colors of food. By doing this, you are following the Japanese principle of Bento. However, since this technique can be difficult for first-timers, maybe trying lowering the expectations of plating your seafood. Three colors is a decent benchmark; brown, green, red, purple, and orange can help you stitch together a technicolor tapestry that excites the eyes before the tastebuds even enter the equation.

Get in Full Gear with Glorious Garnishes

Because garnishes are considered the finishing touch, they can be easy to forget about when it comes to food presentation. Fresh herbs and edible flowers can be surprisingly empowering – ricotta cheese, mint, blueberries, strawberries, and basil all help – but don’t add anything inedible for the sake of variety!

Stand Out from All the Rest

One of the most popular trends in upscale dining is to unlock the secret of stacking. In this case, the element of elevation is your friend, not your enemy. Crab cakes, steak filets, and slivers of salmon can all be served this way – and it works for sides, appetizers, and desserts as well!
