Try Swapping Out Mayo and Other Basic Ingredients in Your Next Crab Cake!

Choosing the best ingredients for making crab cakes can be a tall order.

Choosing the best ingredients for making crab cakes can be a tall order. Good news: it doesn’t have to be this way! Sometimes, cooking your very own Michelin-rated meals at home can seem intimidating. But we’re always happy to help! We’ve come up with some fascinating suggestions for how you can remix your next batch of crab cakes – just by performing some simple substitutions!

The Makeup of Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is so well-loved because of the smooth and creamy texture that it imparts. That said, it isn’t always the healthiest option around. Its most common ingredients are vinegar, egg yolks, oil, and fat. Suppose that you’ve run out of this condiment and you need to prepare a large tray in advance of Mother’s Day – what can you do? That’s where these alternatives enter the picture!

Switch #1: Cashew Cream

Cashew cream is a plant-based derivative of the cashew nut. As such, it’s a fabulous idea for pleasing any vegans at your dining party. Even though the store-bought brands are fine, you can make your own by using a simple blend of cashews and water.

Switch #2: Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is another replacement for mayonnaise. This change-up still gives you that delightful creaminess while also reducing the calorie count. So if you want to make your crab cakes a bit differently this time, go ahead and indulge yourself!

Switch #3: Homemade Aioli

You’ve probably seen aioli used on cheeseburgers and fries before. You can also use these sauces as game-changing ingredients for a sumptuous crab cake feast. Olive oil, egg yolks, and vinegar actually produce a virtually identical spread that presents a yellow sheen due to the olive oil.

Switch #4: Avocado-Based Mayo

Avocados are awesome additions to salads, sandwiches, and even toast! Something you may not realize about them, though, is that you can use them as the base for a healthier mayonnaise variant. While this recommendation excludes the egg, you gain an infusion of avocado flavoring instead!
