3 Frequently Asked Questions About Maryland Crab Cakes

There’s a famous line about how “crab cakes and football, that’s what Maryland does!” As true as that is, it’s not the only thing Maryland does well. It’s hockey season again, and if you’re a fan of the fastest and most aggressive game on ice, you’re probably thrilled that this new campaign allows fans back in the stands. Why do we make this connection? Because it’s easy to associate hastily-made crab cakes with hockey pucks. But that is misleading and, frankly, unfair to crabs and the tasty meals you can get out of them. Don’t send your curiosity to the penalty box! Here are some common questions we can answer for you!

Should I Fry or Bake?

This query looks like a good place to start. Let’s suppose you want to surprise your spouse or family member for a spur-of-the-moment meal. Well, since the crab cakes you make in the kitchen might take longer than you expected, we have a solution! You can pick some up from us via curbside delivery, or you can come in and take them out. Either way, the choice is yours – and you can come to join us in our dining room, too, if you want!

What’s the Difference?

Most cakes are pan-fried to make them even crispier. Baking makes them nice and mouthwateringly brown, though. And yes, in many cases, the crab cakes are broiled in the kitchen before being brought to your table. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide how you want to cook them!

Is There a Good Substitute for Mayo?

Mayonnaise isn’t for everyone. Until you find the right brand, you will actively avoid it as much as you can. But when crab cakes are on the menu, you might not have a choice in the matter. Luckily, there are vegan options available. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, you can try using plain whole milk yogurt, sour cream, or cottage cheese instead!
