Why Seafood and Cheese Are Actually the Perfect Pairing

Seafood and Cheese actually goes together better than you might think.

Seafood and cheese are often described as an odd pairing, but in reality they’re a delicious combination. You might not realize it, but you have definitely had seafood and cheese before if you’ve enjoyed delicious alfredo with shrimp. Why are seafood and cheese actually such a perfect pairing (and why do most people think that they aren’t?)?

Why Do People Think Seafood and Cheese Don’t Mix?

Italian cuisine is the origin for the seafood and cheese myth. The first reason that traditional Italian cuisine is so opposed is the light and delicate flavor of seafood. Seafood is typically paired with soft and subtle flavors, and cheese can often overpower the ingredients it is paired with. Many types of seafood, like flounder, haddock, clams, and oysters, can’t be cooked and seasoned with much beyond a small pat of butter and some lemon juice.

Why Are Seafood and Cheese a Perfect Pair?

When you combine seafood and cheese, it’s important to know that melted cheese is your best bet. Cold or “raw” cheese will certainly overpower seafood. In France, there is a famous fish that combines mussels and a blue cheese broth. In Chile, one of their most beloved dishes consists of clams slowly baked in a sauce of wine, butter, and Parmesan cheese. Last but not least, think of American dishes that happily combine seafood and cheese at chain restaurants. Seafood and cheese are a perfect pairing, as long as both ingredients are warm and heated through.
