How to Tell Shrimp and Crawfish Apart

Shrimp is one of the most popular dishes in many world cuisines. Even if you don’t recognize crawfish right away, you can still learn more about it and how to distinguish it from shrimp!

There are plenty of reasons to love seafood. After all, even though you might find some of it unappealing at first, over time, your tastes will change. Shrimp is one of the most popular dishes in many world cuisines. Even if you don’t recognize crawfish right away, you can still learn more about it and how to distinguish it from shrimp!

Shrimp

Shrimp is an umbrella term. Why is this the case? There are almost 2,000 species of shrimp and other small crustaceans out there. They can be found in both saltwater and freshwater. As we said, they are popular inclusions in menus around the world, from Asia to the Caribbean. They are so versatile that you can eat them on their own or pair them with rice or pasta. We have many different shrimp offerings on our menu here at Costas Inn, so be sure to stop on it and wash it down with a cold beverage of your choice! Shrimp are neutral in flavor and make an excellent base for many different sauces, seasonings, and spices. That’s why they can be boiled, fried, baked, or grilled.

Crawfish

Crawfish are also known as crayfish. Unlike shrimp, they are a freshwater-only species. They are even smaller than their cousins since they max out at four inches, where shrimp can grow to be eight inches long. They’re usually found in the mud at the bottom of rivers and lakes, which might make them harder to find. They are only seasonal, and this means that you only have a short time to try them between January and July. The crawfish is an icon of Cajun cooking, and most of the time you eat them, they are boiled first before being served. Plus, they are often thrown into various specialty dishes such as jambalaya, etouffee, and Cajun rice.
