Crabs are a delicacy in Maryland. They are a delicious summer treat that Marylanders can’t get enough of. If you want to host a proper Maryland crab feast, you will want to be equipped with the right supplies! With that said, here are some of the essentials for a crab feast at your home!
Trashcans
Eating crabs is messy business. After you pick through shells, you should have an easy place to discard them. For that reason, it is always a good idea to have a trash can close by. In addition to crab shells, it is nice to have a place where you can toss your used paper towels, corn cobs, shrimp shells, etc.
Get Your Equipment Ready
There are a few tools commonly used for picking crabs. First and foremost, a crab mallet is almost a necessity for picking crabs. It can be quite tricky to remove claw meat unless you are using a mallet. Other popular supplies you may want to have on hand include crab crackers, crab knives, and crab picks. With these items, it is almost just a matter of preference.
Newspaper
Since picking crabs is so messy, you should cover your table with something to make clean up a little easier. Newspaper is a popular choice because it is something that most people have just laying around the house and can easily be discarded. If you don’t have any newspaper, you could also use a disposable tablecloth.
Paper Towels and Moist Towelettes
A crab feast needs to have plenty of paper towels and moist towelettes at the ready. If someone asks you to pass a side dish you don’t want to have to do it with messy fingers!
