Crabs are members of the crustacean family. These creatures are found all over the world. Besides knowing that many species are delicious to eat, how much do you know about crabs? Keep reading for some interesting facts about crabs that you can share with your friends!

They Are Old Creatures

Did you know that crabs have been around for millions of years? Evidence suggests that they appeared on earth during the Jurassic period. Unfortunately, many species of crabs are endangered because of overconsumption and habitat loss.

There Are Many Types

Us Marylanders know and love the blue crab. But did you know that there were many more species of crabs in the world? Some of which include the Alaskan King Crab, Dungeness Crab, Red Rock Dungeons, and Stone Crabs. One of the main differences between the Maryland Blue Crab from other species of crabs is that blue crabs can be eaten in soft-shell form. Soft shell crabs are battered and fried. They are a favorite of many Marylanders.

Habitat

Most species of crabs live in coastal regions. They can be found in fresh, salty, or brackish water. In addition to aquatic species of crabs, some species only live on land. They can usually be found in sandy spots crawling around rocks.

Crabs Are Omnivores

Crabs are not picky eaters by any means. Crabs eat both plants and meat. They will much on fungi, other crustaceans, mollusks, algae, worms, and mollusks. People often use chicken necks and fish for baiting crab traps.
