When it comes to seafood, shrimp is a staple as it is a favorite to many. Check out these five interesting facts about shrimp.

Species

Did you know that there are thousands of shrimp species located around the world? In fact, there are 2,000 different shrimp species with sizes that vary considerably. They are located all over the world, including the tropics and even the Antarctic Ocean. Most of the shrimp that finds its way on your plates are Gulf Brown, Gulf Pink, and Gulf White Shrimp. The smallest shrimp are about a half inch in total length while the biggest can grow up to a foot long. Tiger shrimp, specifically, have been found to grow as large as an average lobster tail.

Omnivorous  

Did you know that shrimp are omnivorous? Most species of shrimp eat microscopic plants and animal matter found floating through the water. They’ll find the matter by filtering the water or sifting through the ocean floor. Bigger species of shrimp also catch and eat small fish.

Cancer-fighting Mineral

Did you know that including shrimp in your diet means that you have access to the benefits of a cancer-fighting mineral that shrimp contains? Shrimp contains selenium which is an antioxidant mineral that activates enzymes. These enzymes help fight the growth of the free radicals that can cause cancer.

Keep the Heads

Did you know that in many countries and locations throughout the world, shrimp are eaten with the heads on? For some, the heads of shrimp aren’t very appetizing and are usually discarded. However, shrimp heads are rich in flavor and offer a crunchy texture that many people enjoy.

Low Calories, High Protein

Did you know that shrimp are a great source of protein? A medium-sized, cook shrimp has only about seven calories, but an average of 24 grams of protein for 100 grams of shrimp. They pair well with rice and vegetables.
