4 of the Most Bizarre Seafood Dishes from Around the World

Would you try any of these bizarre seafood dishes?

At Costas Inn, we serve some of the most delicious seafood dishes known to man, from savory and succulent crab cakes to tasty calamari. However, there is a whole world out there full of bizarre seafood dishes we aren’t sure we’d like a bite of. Here are four of the most bizarre seafood dishes from around the world.

Odori Ebi: Dancing Shrimp

This Japanese delicacy refers to the practice of eating young shrimp who are still alive. Shrimp are usually dunked into sake to intoxicate them or make them “dance”. Next, they are eaten with special sauce and chewed quickly to kill the shrimp. This bizarre seafood dish combines alcohol and seafood for an interesting treat.

Sannakji

This bizarre seafood dish is popular in Korea. Just like Odori Ebi, it involves live seafood. Sannakji is made of still-moving tentacles cut from a live octopus. Some people enjoy the thrill of eating the tentacles the moment that they’re cut off, but the clear cruelty has kept it from catching on in other countries.

Ikizukuri

Just like the other two dishes so far, this bizarre seafood dish is made of live seafood that customers kill while they eat. Sashimi is made from live sea creatures and enjoyed while the creatures are still alive. In some Asian countries, this practice is outlawed altogether. Where it is legal, customers can choose an animal from a tank and watch it prepared by the chef.

Florida Stone Crab Claws

This bizarre seafood dish is available in America and made by removing crab claws from still-living stone crabs. Since these crabs can regenerate their limbs, restaurants compensate for demand by removing the claws while they still lived and re-releasing them to regenerate their claws. Since each claw is reproduced bigger than the last one, some stone crabs grow massive claws you have to see to believe.
