You’ve surely seen the video of Mike Tomlin’s blunder in the Ravens Steelers game hundreds of times by now, Tomlin with half a foot on the field dancing out of the way of Jacoby Jones as he streaked down the sideline on a punt return. Jones had to swerve to avoid Tomlin and was tackled not long after he passed him. Had he not been coerced in by Tomlin (whether it was intentional, or unintentional, as Tomlin claims), Jones may have scored on the return. The Ravens went on to get the W against the Steelers, but still, punishment was in order. And it was given, to the tune of $100,000 out of Tomlin’s pocket. According to a league release, “in addition, because the conduct affected a play on the field, a modification or forfeiture of draft choices will be considered after the final order of the 2014 draft has been determined.”
Well, it looks like that settles that. The Steelers move on to face the Dolphins this week, while the Ravens have another home game against the Minnesota Vikings. While the Vikings are 3-8-1 this season, they’re coming off a 23-20 overtime win against Chicago, who beat the Ravens in mid-November. The Ravens are still in the playoff hunt, and every game counts.
