Are you a seafood lover? There are all sorts of delicious specimens that are commonly harvested from the sea. It is common knowledge that most forms of seafood provide health benefits to humans. However, most people know very little about seafood in general. Here are a few interesting facts about seafood that you can use to impress your friends.
Oysters
Oysters are known as the home of the beautiful pearl. However, the oysters that we eat are a different variety and don’t carry pearls at all.
Crabs
As many people know, crabs have grades that give a score of the quality of the meat. The grade is determined by what part of the crab that it comes from. The most succulent, large pieces come from the legs and are usually the most expensive; the darker meat usually comes from the claw.
Poke
Poke finds a home in Hawaii and is currently a very trendy fish. You can find it in bowl meals and often served with rice and avocado.
Snapper
Fish that is labeled as snapper may not be snapper at all. A survey conducted by the conservation group Oceana found that red snapper is the most commonly mislabeled fish. The fish that people usually think is red snapper actually ends up being tilapia.
Crawfish
Louisiana claims crawfish as their official state crustacean. In fact, crawfish was the first to be claimed as a state fish. Another interesting fact is that crawfish walk forward, but swim backward.
Kelp
Kelp is becoming much more popular as a food. It has many nutrients, including calcium, fiber, iron, potassium, and sodium.
Lobster
Known as one of the most expensive seafood items on this list, lobster was once known as a food for impoverished people. They were abundant and therefore, cheap.
