How to Prepare Seafood

Seafood can be prepared in a variety of ways!

Are you in search of new ways to prepare your next delicious seafood meal? If you’re feeling adventurous, try one of the techniques from this list to unleash the natural flavors of your favorite seafood dishes!

Steam

Steaming pairs perfectly with the delicate nature of seafood. You’ll use a liquid like water, broth, or wine to transfer heat from the liquid to the food. It’s best for preserving the nutrients and naturally flavorful juices of the seafood. Enhance your steaming liquid with lemon juice, onions, or fresh herbs.

Grill

For a smoky flavor and crispy texture, turn to the grilling technique. Meaty fish with firm flesh can be cut and prepared into steak or fillets while flakier and smaller fish are well served for grilling in a grill basket.

Microwave

Microwaving works in a similar way to steaming. Cover the fish with a microwave-safe plastic wrap or casserole dish to lock in the steam. Be sure to arrange the fish in a single layer to ensure even cooking.

Poach

When you poach seafood, you submerge it in a bath of flavorful liquid at about 160 to 180 degrees, below boiling temperature. It’s perfect for creating a mild flavor and even texture. To avoid the fish becoming mush, it’s better to poach whole fillets of sturdy finish, like salmon.

Broil

To prepare fish for the broiler, approach it in the same way that you would the grill. Broiling adds a nutty flavor and crisp texture to fish. It’s essential to remove it from the heat before it’s completely cooked through, as the internal temperature of the fish will continue to rise after it’s removed from the broiler slowly.

Pan Sear

Use your stovetop and skillet to pan sear fish to perfection. Use medium-high heat to cook your fish on one side before flipping it to the other. Be sure to allow the fish to rest for at least two minutes before serving.

Bake

Baking is an excellent technique for both finfish and shellfish. It surrounds the seafood with a dry heat that allows you to cook the seafood whole.
