A Guide to Telling Snow Crab and King Crab Apart

Crab feast season is almost here!

Crab feast season is almost here! Unfortunately, this year, much like last year, such traditions will have to look slightly different. That’s because social distancing is still the way to go. However, small gatherings for a major holiday like Easter can be done with extreme caution. Maybe you’ll have to do your feast (or next crab boil) through virtual platforms like Skype, Discord, or Zoom. Since there are so many different types of edible crab, they can be difficult to distinguish. Let us help you out!

Fast Facts About Snow Crabs

Snow crabs aren’t as tough to crack open. They’ve got a thinner shell, so scooping their meat out is less effort-intensive. You’ll notice that the meat is also sweeter and milder; you get more legs in a cluster, too. Snow crabs are far more abundant, making them more affordable and better for a crowd – at least they were in the Before Times.

Fast Facts About King Crabs

Meanwhile, king crab shells present a prickly exterior. For one thing, that makes them harder to hold. For another, you’ll need seafood crackers to break the shells open – pulling them apart with elbow grease won’t do it. The meat is firm enough to come out in one entire piece when you finally extract it. King crabs have huge legs, so you’ll more than likely only get one at a time.

How They’re Similar

Something that’ll make you happy is that both species of crab yield deliciously tender and flavorful meat. Seek them out at your local grocery store, and if you can’t find them there, try ordering online from reputable markets you know you can trust. We understand if you’re reluctant to try both methods. We can supply you instead, so view our vast menu!

How They’re Different

Now let’s talk about how these crabs are unique. The factors that set them apart include size, texture, taste, price, and habitat. The fishing season also comes into play, so be mindful of that as well!
