4 Ways to Cook Crabs

Maryland’s favorite way to cook crabs? Steamed and seasoned! Or maybe as crab cakes…

Crab is one of the most delicious things known to man, and in Maryland cooking crabs is an art and a science. The meat inside will turn out tender, succulent, and delicious no matter how you cook crabs, but here are four of our favorite methods to get the job done.

Boil It

Boiling is the most common way to cook crabs, and it works well for just about every type of crab under the sun. Start by boiling water and salt in a large deep pot. To spice it up, add Old Bay, beer, or white wine to the mixture. Add the crabs and return the water to boil again. Once the crabs begin to float after about 10-15 minutes, use tongs to remove them from the pot.

Steam It

Steaming is another popular way to cook crabs that ensures all of the juices stay inside, instead of leaking out into the cooking water. Use another large pot to boil about an inch of salt water. Put a steamer basket over the top and place the crabs inside. The steaming takes about 10-20 minutes to cook crabs, depending on how big they are. Remove them once they are done and let them naturally cool or run them under cool water to speed up the process.

Grill It

Grilling crab is a cool way to enjoy the sweet flavor with the smokiness of the grill. Clean the crabs thoroughly before you start and preheat the grill. Brush each crab with melted butter and place them on the surface. Cover the grill and cook the crabs until they are lightly browned. Flip them, brush with butter, and cook the other side. This way to cook crabs only takes about 10 minutes! Once they are done, take them off the grill and serve them hot.

Roast It

Just like with grilling, this requires that the crabs be cleaned first. Once they are cleaned, put them in a roasting pan with melted butter, herbs, spices, shallots, garlic, or ginger. Cook them in a 500 degree oven for 10 minutes.
