“In Baltimore, everybody knows Costas Inn.” So begins a nice review of our restaurant
The review, entitled “Dundalk’s Costas Inn cooks up more than crabs,” declares that “Costas Inn has been a Baltimore landmark for more than four decades,” since its founding in 1971. It goes on to state that since its founding, the Inn “has grown into a nationally recognized crab powerhouse” that “serves steamed crabs year-round and ships crab cakes and crab seasoning all over the country.”
The Sun decided to review us in the off-season, but found that even on “a chilly Wednesday night,” the dining room was more than half-full. The article adds that the space is large and can accommodate large groups, such as the several multi-generational families sharing tables that were in the restaurant when the Sun visited. (We’ve always been proud of Costas’ status as a premiere family dining venue.)
Acknowledging that the debate over who serves the “best crab cake in Baltimore” is popular, the reviewer declares that Costas’ crab cake appetizer “proved the restaurant has earned its spot in those conversations.” Our “light touch with filler and seasoning kept the crab’s sweet flavor at the forefront,” and the spicy-salty mixture in Costas’ house-blended seasoning “was a good one and brought out the subtle flavor of crab.”
And though the Sun notes that Costas is known mostly for its steamed crabs and crab cakes, it states that “the restaurant’s other entrees also deserve attention.” For example, orange roughy Rockefeller “showed off the kitchen’s skill with other types of seafood,” going on to observe that “alone, the fish was flaky, if a bit bland, and on its own, the topping was luscious, but overwhelming” – but “together, though, they were excellent,” with orange roughy’s mild flavor and firm texture balancing “the intensely rich spinach and cheese topping.”
In sum, the review concludes, “with a menu filled with well-executed traditional seafood dishes, Costas, like Maryland, is for more than just crabs.” We appreciate (and heartily agree with) that sentiment, and hope you’ll come out and see why we’re one of the best seafood restaurants in Baltimore!
